The Prince of Wales practice in Poundbury and Portesham recently held bake sales to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The Poundbury event was developed by a patient services team member supported by the PPG and the Portesham PPG organised and ran their event during a flu clinic at the village hall.

Both events offered home-made cakes to staff, patients and passing members of the public to enjoy, raising over £650 for the charity.

Peter Hazelton, Chair of Prince of Wales PPG said ‘Katie, one of our fantastic patient services team members organised a Macmillan coffee morning at the surgery asked if the PPG could help support it. The group jumped at the chance to help-out and we were soon inundated with offers of cake from surgery staff, PPG members and even a partner of one of our doctors. Katie also organised a colouring competition for children which proved to be a great addition to the day.’

Andrew Bailey, Chair of Portesham PPG said ‘The annual flu vaccination event in the village hall is always popular and this year we wanted to hold a Macmillan coffee morning as a way to give something back to the community. We were blown away by the generosity of people who baked us cakes and the staff and patients who popped by our stall to have a chat, get some cake and give us a donation.’

Sarah McNulty and Rosalind Fuller from Prince of Wales practice said ‘We loved the idea of holding fundraising events at the surgeries and support from our PPGs meant that staff could continue to focus on providing the best service to our patients while the PPGs managed the coffee mornings. The generous support from everyone involved helped to make the events so successful, it showed real community spirit.’

Patient Participation Groups are run by volunteers and work alongside practice teams within GP surgeries. As well as providing feedback to practices on services and helping get information to the wider patient population, PPGs work on projects that bring health and wellbeing benefits to their fellow patients.
