Monday 5 May 2025 is International Day of the Midwife, a time to celebrate midwives and show thanks.
This year’s theme for International Day of the Midwife is “Midwives: Critical in every Crisis”.
Vicky Garner, Lead Midwife, from the Dorset Local Maternity and Neonatal System Team at NHS Dorset said,
“It is an opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the strength and resilience of midwives globally, whether in times of adversity or prosperity.
“The true strength of a midwife lies not only in their skill but also in their unwavering commitment to providing safe and nurturing care.
“Midwives are central to promoting maternal and newborn health, ensuring that mothers, babies, fathers and those important to them receive the best possible support at a pivotal time in their lives.”
This year marks an exciting chapter for maternity services in Dorset with the official opening of the brand new BEACH Building (Births, Emergency care, And, Critical care and child Health) at University Hospitals Dorset.
The BEACH Building offers an exceptional Maternity and Neonatal Unit designed to provide comfort, care, and the highest standard of medical support for expecting parents. The unit is set to welcome over 4,400 babies annually, ensuring comprehensive care from pregnancy and birth through to postnatal support.
Investments like this reflect the value placed on midwifery and the role that midwives play in creating safe and supportive birth experiences. It also highlights the incredible opportunities to those considering a career in midwifery.
Midwifery is a highly skilled, evidence-based profession. Every day midwives play an important role as part of the maternity and neonatal team, using their skills and expertise to care for women, babies and families at one of the most important times in their lives.
Studying midwifery means you could be on track to one of the most unique, rewarding and important jobs – helping to bring new life into the world.
