From Paul Johnson, Chief Medical Officer
“We understand the Burton Branch Surgery in Christchurch has historically been a much-valued community facility, and missed by some patients since it closed last year.
“Whenever we’re making difficult decisions on the future of any service, we always consider public feeling and wider feedback in the hope there will be a positive outcome in terms of patient benefits and access to services.
“We received an application to reopen the site, but following a rigorous governance process, we decided it should remain closed.
“This decision was not taken lightly but based on the needs and benefits of all prospective patients in the Christchurch area, and sustainability of medical services available in the locality.
“Our decision will allow these well-regarded services to be more resilient – to grow, thrive and deliver quality primary medical services.
“The GP surgery catchment area for Burton residents is covered by Christchurch Medical Practice and Farmhouse Surgery. Other practices in the area may also accept patient registrations on request, however, this is down to practice discretion.
“Reopening would have required additional costs, which was not justifiable given the current financial challenges facing the NHS. It could lead to the destabilisation of local practices and services, rather than increasing appointments. Consequently, this would reduce the provision on the area and result in significant financial pressures for the other local surgeries which could lead to further closures.”
