The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme participant feedback

How did you feel when you found out you were at high risk of developing diabetes?

My brother died from diabetes having had gangrene due to being overweight, poor living and a lack of exercise. I had to insist with him that he go to hospital because his right foot had gone black. It was a difficult conversation and in fact I called 111 on a Friday night and his leg was amputated below the kneeon Saturday morning. He was a single man and didn’t look after himself well. He lasted 2 years post amputation. He was 69. Therefore, I felt guilty for my family and was definitely not going down the same path. My wonderful GP, Dr. Ute McCrudden, arranged for me to go on this course and I have been more than happy to attend when I could and George has been great. The course was extremely informative.

What was your most important goal you wanted to achieve? What setbacks did you go through and how did you overcome them?

Having been told that I was 47 count I decided that I did not want to be part of this community if I could possibly avoid it. I have lost weight, do much more walking and my wife has helped me change diet.

What outcomes have you achieved so far?

I am down from 47 to 40 in less than 6 months by losing weight etc. It is quite remarkable and I am over the moon with the results. Thank you!!

Have other people (for example family and friends) benefitted from you joining the programme? If so, how?

I am not sure although I think my brother-in-law and his wife have taken note. I tell people when I see them to try to make them aware if appropriate.

Is there any advice you would give to someone looking to start the programme now?

Go on the course. Lose weight, change your diet, do more exercise, do not vegetate, get out there each day. Diabetes is the next bad disease to affect the population. There are far too many unhealthy and overweight youngsters. Try to show them the way out. This thing is serious!!!!

Would you recommend the Healthier You Programme to others seeking to reduce their diabetes? If so, why?

Yes definitely. I have only attended the first half because my count came down so rapidly but I think the course is a wonderful gift from the NHS and my GP to enlighten those wishing to avoid what happened to my brother and the risk of serious ongoing medication for the rest of your life.
